Day 6: Something you hope you never have to do

Hey, it’s 30 days of truth. No one said they had to be consecutive. Anyways, it’s going to be pretty hard to top Emily Suess’s response to this one (yes, her hope was to never sell her body for crack), but I’ll give it a shot…

Something I hope to never have to do is live on the streets. There are so many homeless people in Chicago (and elsewhere), and I can’t help but wonder how they got there. It can be hard not to judge homeless people and easy to assume why or how they got there. But I feel like it’s sometimes frighteningly easy to have one event snowball into an unmanageable situation that could result in being homeless. Especially for people who don’t have a network of people to rely on.

Plus, I don’t think I could handle being homeless. I’m anti-social and stubborn. I can’t imagine having to ask people for help on a daily basis and constantly being brushed off by those that are apathetic or just plain rude.

Just the lack of resources and tough conditions homeless people have to endure are bad enough, but sometimes it seems that the psychological effects of being invisible to the world around you are even worse. On that note, check out this project: Invisible People.

Although, I admit, I rarely give any change, I always at least try to acknowledge a homeless person asking for something instead of blatantly ignoring them.

  1. I hear you! I wouldn’t want to have to live on the streets either. It’s a rough world out there, and I must remember how very easy I have it.

By the way, thanks for linking to my post. I’m adding your blog to my Google reader.
