November Musicians at Work Forum: How to Run Your Business

This month’s free workshop for musicians is titled, “How to Run Your Business” and will bring out Lawyers for the Creative Arts to  discuss copyrights, publishing deals, licensing and royalties. So basically, how to get paid! Do not miss this one, musicians. I know these topics can seem overwhelming, but you gotta know your business.

Event Overview:
Please join the Chicago Music Commission, Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events and Lawyers for the Creative Arts to learn the ins and outs of how to divide and document ownership in your songs and sound recordings. We will discuss copyright overall, songwriter splits, music publishing, performing rights organizations such as ASCAP and SESAC, mechanical licenses through Harry Fox, and how to track royalties after signing with a publisher or record label.

You will also hear more about the differences between work-made-for-hire deals and copyright assignments and how this affects getting song rights back down the road.

When & Where:

  •  Monday, Nov. 14 at 6 p.m.
  • Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington St. – 5th floor West
Who:
  • Paul Natkin – Executive Director, Chicago Music Commission

Musicians at Work Forums address current issues of interest and concern for Chicago’s growing community of musicians working in all genres. For all forums, venues, acts and music professionals are welcome to bring fliers, business cards and marketing materials for the audience.
